While I am a die hard NPR listener, I am also a big fan of making fun out of NPR’s pretentiousness. Some things are pretty easy to target: obsession with jazz music, calm measured voices, and so on. However, when razzing NPR, I tend to overlook the bizarre and exotic names of the hosts. It’s anyone’s guess as to why NPR has been able to assemble such an impression range of hosts with impossibly unique names (wacky name affirmative action!), but one thing is for sure - it gets them a ton of cultural cache. (This reminds me of our discussion in episode one during Love/Hate of people with three names.)
