Best Movie Summer

Chris and I are notorious nostalgic worshippers of the 1980s and, given we wrote a screenplay titled 1985, we have a special place in our hearts for the middle the decade.

Cinematical proves just how right we’ve been about the pop culture bounties and treasures of the mid-80s by selecting 1984 and 1985 as two of the best summers for movies ever. Check out their lists of releases and dates. They will blow your mind.

Your NPR Name

While I am a die hard NPR listener, I am also a big fan of making fun out of NPR’s pretentiousness. Some things are pretty easy to target: obsession with jazz music, calm measured voices, and so on. However, when razzing NPR, I tend to overlook the bizarre and exotic names of the hosts. It’s anyone’s guess as to why NPR has been able to assemble such an impression range of hosts with impossibly unique names (wacky name affirmative action!), but one thing is for sure - it gets them a ton of cultural cache. (This reminds me of our discussion in episode one during Love/Hate of people with three names.)

Anyway, using the formula from the linked blog post my NPR name is Tamner Tobermory, what’s yours?

Episode 10

In the news: Tanner starts off with a rant about conspiracy theorists and how dumb they are. Chris covers the followings stories in the news: Navy Seals engaged in some hardcore sniping to save an American from pirates, Mel Gibson’s wife finally came to her senses, and Phil Spector will be cultivating his intense afro in prison.

And here’s a link to the abomination that is Ray Stevens.

In culture: Tanner reviews Adventureland and Rachel Getting Married. Chris provides a brief review of Across the Universe.

In humor: Chris asks “Why Aren’t You Pissed?” about the Tea Parties batshit crazy conservatives are holding and Fox News is promoting.

Strange Maps

This has been one of my favorite go-to sites for over a year now when I feel like my mind is stagnant and I need to learn something new.  Strange Maps posts some of the most unique and interesting maps of all varieties, and offers informative commentary for each one.  I highly encourage you to stop in there weekly to see what new content is posted.  I think you’ll find yourself immersed and educated.

Episode 7

In the news: Chris spends the news segment complaining about a tour book’s suggestions for places to eat in Little Rock, Arkansas. Trust me, it’s funnier and more informative than it sounds!

Oh, and here’s a couple of the places Chris visited:

Whole Hog Cafe
Jimmy’s Serious Sandwiches
Aerospace Education Center
